Once one of northern England's most important strongholds, the ruins of Pontefract Castle tell the story of a town from the 11th century through to the nation's civil war. When Pontefract was victim of endless attacks in the 1600s, the people of the town petitioned parliament to have the fortress torn down, so as to save them from future suffering. Today visitors can explore the rocky ruins and hear tales of the area throughout the centuries.
