Somerset Trip Planner
Welcome to Somerset!
Somerset county is located in southwest England, bordered by Gloucestershire to its north, Wiltshire to its east, Dorset to the southeast, Devon to its southwest, and edged by the Bristol Channel to its northwest. Visitors converge in Somerset for its compelling history, mysterious legends and vivid landscape culminating in intriguing attractions such as Wookey Hole with its legendary witch, Cheddar Gorge with human remains dating back to 12,000 BC, and Exmoor's wild ponies. The region is also rich with Arthurian lore: Cadbury Castle, an Iron-Age fort, has been connected with Camelot;Glastonbury Tor is the purported entrance to the mystical land of Avalon; and Glastonbury Abbey lays claim on the final resting place of King Arthur. And, like much of the United Kingdom, the Romans occupied this region from AD 47 until 409, leaving behind sophisticated structures such as theRoman Baths at Bath.
The landscape is vast and varied as reflected at Ebbor Gorge, River Axe, Mendip Hills, Somerset Levels and Moors and some 64 km (40 mi) of coastline providing excellent opportunities for walks, wildlife watching and flora spotting. Such an inspiring setting affects its denizens, resulting in a rich arts and cultural scene. In addition to the famous Glastonbury Festival, Somerset is also home to the Bath Literature Festival, Frome Festival, Coleridge Cottage, Herschel Museum of Astronomy and the Jane Austen Centre.
