York, NYK Museums
From small items such as railway timepieces, to such grand exhibits as locomotives and carriages, the National Railway Museum offers a fine tribute to rail transportation. Displays include the Shinkansen (Japan's Bullet Train), Royal Trains and an Interactive Learning Centre. Rides can be had at certain times on the minature railway or the steam train.
Situated on an actual World War Two Bomber Command Station, the Yorkshire Air Museum is devoted to aviation from early days to post war times. Collections include uniforms, an air gunner's collection and the 'bouncing bomb' prototype by famous designer Barnes Wallis.
The fine collections of costumes, military articles and social history are displayed in unusual structures: that is, the city's old prison buildings (there is still some graffiti on the walls which is hundreds of years old). Learn about the past 400 hundred years of York's history. A gift shop and coffee shop are on the site.
