York, NYK Historic Sites & Interpretive Centres
Standing atop a steep grassy hill within the walls of the city of York, this rounded tower has a history dating back to 1190, when it played a role in the prosecution of European Jews during the crusades. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top of the tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the city.
Meticulously created, this replica of a 10th century bustling Viking Age metropolis is a must see if you are in York. Based on 20 years of archaeological finds from the Coppergate area, Jorvik transports visitors via 'time machine' to all the sights, sounds and smells of the time period. Actual artefacts can also be seen.
Founded in the 11th century as a Benedictine abbey, St. Mary's Abbey (or St. Mary's Priory as it is also referred to) went on to become the wealthiest and most powerful religious house in northern England. Today, the abbey is in the form of ruins and while it is now overshadowed by the impressive Minster, a visit to the ruins provides a glimpse into the decadent and grand structure that once was.
