Set in the magnificent Howardian Hills, 15 miles from the city of York, is Castle Howard. This private estate encompasses one of the most spectacular settings in Britain, including the home itself which as built in 1699. While privately owned, the residence is open to visitors who can witness the fine architecture of the house itself, art works by such masters as Gainsborough and Reynolds and delightful gardens with interesting buildings such as the Mausoleum and the Temple of the Winds. Nunnington Hall, located in the tiny village of Nunnington near Helmsley, is one of Yorkshire's elegant and well-known stately homes, now in the care of the National Trust. The manor house dates at least to the 13th century and was once home to the doctor who served Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I. The grounds include a 17th century walled garden that is now entirely organic.
