Ripon, NYK Squares & Plazas

In the centre of Ripon is Market Square, the hub of the city centre and home to a schedule of year round events. A 27 metre-tall (90 ft) obelisk stands at the centre of the square and is the location of the nightly Wakeman ceremony at which the official hornblower of Ripon arrives in traditional dress and blows an 1865 horn four times at 9pm, once in each direction from the four corners of the obelisk. The custom of a night watchman dates to at least the 15th century.
