Ripon, NYK Historic Sites & Interpretive Centres

Located in the tiny village of Jervaulx north of Ripon, this abbey by the same name is a privately-owned Cistercian ruin from the 12th century. While it suffered more than other Yorkshire abbeys during the Dissolution and as a result is less impressive than its grand counterparts, visiting these peaceful ruins is a low-key yet inspiring affair. The site is maintained through donations and features a tea shop and B&B nearby.

Fountains Abbey refers to both the abbey ruins and the entire estate on which they lie. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Fountains Abbey is arguably England's most well known and best-preserved Cistercian abbey. Established in the late 11th century, it became one of the country's richest and most prominent religious houses before falling into collapse during the Dissolution. An entire day can be spent at the estate - touring the abbey itself, visiting Fountains Hall (a 1610 Jacobian mansion) or the Victorian St. Mary's Church, or walking the grounds of the 822-acre (333-ha) estate which includes the elegant 18th century Studley Royal Water Garden as well as numerous temples, statues and follies. Open year round with limited hours in winter months.
