River Rye
Starting in the North York Moors near Cleveland Hills, the River Rye passes beside Rievaulx Abbey and through Helmsley before joining the River Derwent in Malton. At Rievaulx, the location of the abbey was based on the river's presence but in order to have enough flat land to build on, the monks need to divert the river and its course was changed three times during the 12th century.
