Bleak House was built in 1790 as a military fort, however, it is more famously known as the residence of Charles Dickens. Dickens raised his family here and wrote many of his greatest works. The rooms are filled with artifacts delineating the life and work of Dickens. In addition there is a maritime museum and the cellars outline the smuggling industry that once took place in Broadstairs.
