In 1072, the illustrious King William the Conqueror ordered the formation of the Durham Castle after a defeat of the Normans. During the early medieval period the fortified Castle was central in the strategy to defend the country from the fear of invasions from Scotland. Shortly after, the dominant Prince Bishops took residence. In 1837, the castle became home to scholars in the form of University of Durham, which continues today. Guided tours of the castle are available. Address: Palace Green Durham England DH1 3RW
