The educational seeds of Cambridge were planted in around 1209 when scholars fled the hostile townspeople of Oxford and settled in the thriving commercial town. The organization of learned folk gathered in churches, private dwellings, and rented buildings. In the 14th century, the university acquired land and built its own buildings. During the years that followed, many had a hand in the development of the university as it is known today: a fine institution of learning, with over 60 Nobel Prizes having been awarded to Members.
